Good afternoon, everyone:
I would like to begin my comments today by thanking and commending my friend and respected colleague, Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson for conceiving of and leading the John Lewis Commemorative Task Force. The efforts of that group culminated at the unveiling ceremony for the John Lewis Memorial on Saturday, August 24, on the square in downtown Decatur.
Previously, what stood on that space was a monument to the confederacy which was erected over 100 years ago as an act of defiance and as a monument to racial injustice.
Now there stands a monument to a man who stood for peace; a man who believed in getting into good trouble; a man whose civic and public service stands as an example that we may all aspire to. I was very proud to bear witness to such a significant event in the history of DeKalb County. I was very proud to serve as a member of the task force. And I thank Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson for affording me that wonderful opportunity.
On August 22, it was great to be in my hometown of Savannah, Georgia for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Friends of Disabled Adults & Children (FODAC’s) new distribution center there. FODAC provides refurbished equipment and services for adults and children with disabilities to improve their overall quality of life. I am very proud that they are based in District 4. And it was an honor to support their expansion to serve coastal Georgia. I commend FODAC President and CEO, Chris Brand for his leadership of this amazing asset in our community. And I thank him for the invitation to attend.
Our annual Veterans Resources Expo & Fellowship Lunch will take place on September 12, 2024 at the Tobie Grant Recreation Center in Scottdale. More information is available across our communications platforms.
There was an item on our agenda today pertaining to our continued efforts to revitalize the Memorial Drive Corridor. The approval of this agenda item is the triggering mechanism for releasing the $1.5 million allocation from Congressman Hank Johnson for our branding project via a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. I am so grateful to Congressman Johnson for recognizing our efforts and choosing to augment my previous financial support of this initiative. I am happy to report that progress to make improvements on this vital commercial corridor will continue.

As always, thank you to the citizens of District 4 and DeKalb County for affording me this opportunity to serve. It is indeed an honor.
